If you want to put equipment like skis, bikes, surfboards or canoes up there, you’ll want to choose a long slim box. Long boxes tend to stick out over the windscreen but other than that they are the same as other shape boxes.
Next, think about what capacity you are likely to need. To give you an idea of sizes for comparison, our 350 litre car roof box is equivalent to a mid-size car boot; 480 litres is about the same as a large car boot and our biggest roof box, 580 litres, is roughly equivalent to the size of a large estate car boot.
If price is a consideration or you just need space enough for a few items like a rucksack, boots and sleeping bags, our 200 litre capacity roof box is ideal. Buying a roof box is long-term investment though so if you plan on making great use of it, it makes sense to consider a bigger box.
